AVE MARIA, Fla. --- The Ave Maria baseball team dropped game one of today's doubleheader to Warner 6-5 and trailed in the rubber match 11-8 when the game was called heading to the ninth, 11-8. The two teams will resume game two on Monday at 4:30pm at Bowie's Ballpark.
Warner jumped out to the early lead in game one with two runs in the top of the first. AMU cut the lead in half in the fourth on a Luis Dominguez RBI single to drive in Ryan Keegan.
Both teams put three runs on the board in the fifth. After an RBI single by Rico Soto, Dominguez singled to left and a couple errors by Warner allowed Soto and Matt Wiles to score.
The Royals extended their lead to two in the seventh with a run. In the bottom half of the inning, Keegan reached on a fielder's choice but another Warner error allowed Tully Allen to cross home.
Seven Gyrenes recorded hits in game one. Dominguez was 3-for-5 with an RBI. Keegan and Steven Valentine each tallied two hits. Allen scored a team-best two runs.
Justin Bureau pitched 6.2 innings and allowed three earned runs on nine hits and a walk in the loss. He struck out six.
There was no lack of offense in game two. Warner started the game with three runs in the first, five in the second, and two in the third. The Gyrenes kept pace with four in the first and two in the second. Dominguez hit a three-run homerun in the first. Valentine followed it up with a RBI single to score Nick Wydler. Wydler drove in two in the second on a single up the middle.
Trailing 10-6 in the fifth, Brian Spradlin doubled to drive in Valentine and Steven Perez.
Warner added a run in the seventh to make it 11-8.
Soto is 3-for-5 in game two. Valentine also had multiple hits for AMU.
