Baseball Loses Two Close Games in Mississippi

HATTIESBURG, Miss.- The Ave Maria University baseball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader on Friday, falling 6-3 in a neutral site game against Georgetown College before suffering a 2-1 defeat at the hands of No. 6 William Carey University in the nightcap.

The first game of the weekend was a heartbreaker for the Gyrenes, as a four-run seventh inning propelled Georgetown to a 6-3 win.

Each team scored a run in the first inning. Georgetown got on the board thanks to a two-out single from Sean Williams, while the Gyrenes answered on an RBI single by Ryan Keegan, which drove in Tully Allen.

Georgetown reclaimed the lead in the top of the third inning, scoring one run. The Tigers loaded the bases on three walks, and took a 2-1 lead on a sacrifice fly from Brandon Benson. Sergio Miyares left the bases loaded for Ave Maria, forcing Adryan Ramirez to fly out to center field.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Gyrenes evened the game on a sacrifice fly. Nick Wydler started the inning with a single, and moved up to third base on a steal and a wild pitch. A flyout to right field allowed Wydler to score from third, tying the score at 2-2.

Ave Maria took their first lead of the game in the bottom of the sixth. The Gyrenes loaded the bases on two walks and a Rico Soto single, and grabbed a 3-2 advantage when Nick Wydler drew a walk. The Gyrenes weren't able to score again, and led just 3-2 entering the seventh.

The Tigers claimed victory with four runs in the top of the seventh. The Tigers scored on an Antonio Monroy single, a wild pitch, and an error that allowed two runs to score.

In the nightcap, the Gyrenes could only manage one run, spoiling a solid start from Andrew Steele, who allowed just two runs over seven innings of work.

William Carey scored both of their runs in the bottom of the second inning. Marcus Buckley drove in both runs with a two-out single that allowed Wes Brown and JT Wright to score.

Ave Maria responded with a run in the top of the third inning. Tully Allen singled with one out, and then stole second base. He came in to score on a single from Ryan Keegan, who got the Gyrenes on the board with two outs. Neither team was able to score in the final six innings of the game, keeping the final score at 2-1.

The Gyrenes will get an opportunity for a split with both Georgetown and William Carey on Saturday, as AMU plays another doubleheader. First pitch against Georgetown is scheduled for 1:00 p.m., while Ave Maria and William Carey are slated to meet at 8 p.m.
