Lacrosse Falls to No. 2 Team

HARDEEVILLE, S.C.- The Ave Maria University lacrosse team suffered a 19-3 defeat at the hands of the Blue Devils of Lawrence Tech, who are ranked No. 2 in the nation, on Wednesday evening. The game was played in Hardeeville, South Carolina at the SCAD-Savannah Athletic Complex.

Lawrence Tech scored twice in the first minute of the game, and raced out to a 12-1 lead before a goal from AMU's Aiyanah Simms ended the half. Four goals from Ashley Sherry and three goals from Isabelle Vickers led the way for the Blue Devils, while Katelyn Sherman provided the only other Ave Maria goal.

Richelle Harris scored Ave Maria's only goal in the second half, where Lawrence Tech outscored the Gyrenes 7-1. Anna Gagnon scored three goals in the final 30 minutes to pace the Blue Devil offense, with four other players accounting for one goal each.

Alexa Keeler and Alexis Smich each recorded four ground balls in the losing effort for the Gyrenes, and Smich led the team with three draw controls. Andie Wagner made seven saves in net. Lawrence Tech was led by Sherry's four goals and four assists, while Ashley Collins added two goals and four assists and Vickers scored three times with two assists.

The Gyrenes will play four games in an eight day span, all of which coming at Gyrene Field in Ave Maria. The first of these games comes on Friday against Lourdes University from Ohio. Face-off between the Gyrenes and the Grey Wolves is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. in Ave Maria.
