WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- The Ave Maria University women's soccer team was defeated on Wednesday night, falling 6-0 to Palm Beach Atlantic University, an NCAA Division II foe. The Sailfish took 41 shots on the evening, while the Gyrenes attempted three.
After ten scoreless minutes of action, the Sailfish got on the board on a goal from Thorkatla Halldorsdottir in the 11th minute, with the assist logged by Kylie Meola. PBA then increased their lead to 2-0 in the 15th minute, when Jaycie Tate scored her fifth goal of the season on a long cross from Kylee Rulio that was headed into the net.Â
In the final ten minutes of the first half, two m  ore goals were added by PBA to account for the 4-0 score at halftime. Karina Williams scored her second goal of the season in the 37th minute on an assist from Trine Seistrup. Seistrup then scored a goal of her own 61 seconds later on a rebound, with the assist credited to Cajsa Lundstrom.
PBA scored twice in the second half to complete the scoring. Meagan Cameron scored in the 58th minute, placing a cross from Kelly Giddes in the bottom right corner of the net. Lundstrom finished the scoring in the 87th minute, scoring on a free kick from outside the penalty box.
Molly Jensen stopped a career-high 15 shots in net for the Gyrenes, turning away numerous scoring opportunities from the Sailfish. Jensen's 15 save effort was the most by a Gyrene keeper in nearly a year.
Ave Maria's three shots were provided by Lauren Campoe, Bernadette Hartney, and Sarah McBride, with Hartney and McBride recording the shots on goal.
The Gyrenes will return home on Friday, and will welcome Florida Memorial University to Gyrene Field for a match that was rescheduled from September 4. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. in Ave Maria.
