Box Score 2 BABSON PARK, Fla. --- The Ave Maria men's and women's tennis teams opened their 2019 season with a conference match at Webber on Saturday afternoon. The men's team fell 8-1 while the women's dropped a 9-0 decision.

The Gyrene men's team took the first point of their match, winning at two-doubles. TJ Fischer and Jonathan Althoff defeated Webber's Kyle Hall and Jordi Serrano 8-4. Webber evened up the match with a win at one-doubles over David Zuleta and Nicholas Hoffmeister, 8-3. Brandon Valley and Cesar Menacho fell at three-doubles 8-4.

In singles play, Webber's Hugo Hasegawa topped Zuleta 6-2, 6-3 at one-singles. Hofmeister fell 6-2, 6-4 at two singles and Althoff lost at three-singles 6-0, 6-0. At the four-singles position, Menacho was defeated in two sets, 6-4, 6-3. Davin Hanton and Brandon Valley played at four-singles and five-singles, respectively, and were topped in two sets each.

On the women's side, Camila Branstner and Averie Harkie played at one-doubles and were defeated 8-2 by Webber's Emily and Paula John. Lauren McCarthy and Amy Gateau played two-doubles and Kutina Carlos and Anna Mahoney played three-doubles for AMU. Both doubles teams fell 8-0.

Branstner played one-singles and fell to Emily John 6-0, 6-2. At two-singles, Paula Johns defeated Harkie 6-1, 6-0. McCarthy, Gateau, and Mahoney played three-, four-, and five-singles, respectively and each fell 6-0, 6-0. Kutina Carlos was topped by Jordashia Watson 6-1, 6-1 at six-singles.

Both tennis squads return to action on Tuesday with their home opener against Florida National at 12 p.m.
