Service Errors Haunt Gyrenes In 3-0 Loss At Keiser

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. --- The Ave Maria volleyball team had their four-match win streak come to an end at Keiser on Wednesday night. The Gyrenes fell 3-0 in the conference match-up with the Seahawks.
 
McKenna Tyson and Madelyn Haut led the Gyrenes with 12 kills and 11 kills, respectively. After a slow start to the match, AMU hit .236 on the night with 38 kills and 12 attack errors.
 
AMU struggled on serve-receive on Wednesday night. AMU had 12 service errors, nearly double their season average, with seven different players picking up a service error. Keiser had eight service aces.  
 
The Blue and Green came out slow and fell behind early in the first set. AMU hit .068 with nine kills and six errors in the opening set, leading to a 25-12 Keiser win.
 
The second and third sets were much closer. AMU and Keiser traded points early in the second set leading to a 10-10 tie as they approached the midway point. Keiser began to pull away and built a 19-15 lead before the Gyrenes closed the gap to two, 21-19, late. With the Seahawks leading 24-20, AMU scored back-to-back points before KU finished off the set 25-22 on a service error by the Gyrenes.
 
The Blue and Green held the lead for a majority of the third set. The Gyrenes built a four-point edge early and maintained that lead 13-9 midway through the set. A 6-1 run by Keiser gave the Seahawks the lead. Later in the set, three-straight points by the Gyrenes gave AMU a one-point lead, 21-20. Keiser would win five of the next eight points to take the set 25-23.
 
Katie Grose led AMU with 27 assists and eight digs, both team highs. Flavia Rusterholz had both of AMU's service aces and both came late in the third set when AMU was trying to rally to keep the match alive.
 
The Gyrenes move to 9-9 overall and to 4-5 in Sun Conference play while the Seahawks are now 24-8 on the season with an 8-2 mark against TSC opponents.
 
Ave Maria returns to action on Saturday when they take on Florida Memorial in Miami Gardens. The TSC contest is set to begin at 2 p.m.
