Women's Soccer Narrowly Falls to Webber

BABSON PARK, Fla.- The Ave Maria University women's soccer team narrowly dropped a conference match on Wednesday afternoon, losing 2-1 to the Warriors of Webber International University. The host Warriors scored the go-ahead goal in the 60th minute to claim the victory over the Gyrenes at the Warrior Turf Field.

Webber took an early lead in the seventh minute, as an assist from Sienna Scully led to a goal from Leah Borders. Borders' tally just over six minutes into the match was her fourth of the season, and gave Webber a 1-0 lead.

Ave Maria answered with a goal of their own in the 16th minute. Freshman Haley Ewing scored the first goal of her collegiate career, beating the Warrior goalkeeper to tie the match at one. Neither team would score in the final 29 minutes of the first half, keeping the match tied at one after 45 minutes.

The game-winning goal was scored by the Warriors just under ten minutes into the second half. In the 60th minute, Warrior leading scorer Megan Warner found the back of the net on an assist from     Angelina Conde, giving Webber a lead they would not relinquish. Warner's goal was her seventh of the season, as well as her third game-winning goal.

Goalie Amanda Stacy kept the Gyrenes in the contest, turning away a season-high eleven shots in net. Warner provided five of those shots on goal to lead both teams. The Gyrenes logged six shots on goal and eight total shots, led by three total shots and two attempts on net from senior Meghan Precord, the team's leading scorer.

AMU returns home for the first of two consecutive matches at Gyrene Field on Saturday. The opponent on Saturday is the Warner University Royals, with kickoff scheduled for 11:30 a.m. in Ave Maria.
