AVE MARIA, Fla. --- The Ave Maria women's basketball team rolled to an 88-36 win over Johnson (Fla.) on Saturday evening. Early in the third quarter, Sarah Miller grabbed her 12th of 15 rebounds on the night to reach 1,000 career rebounds. She becomes the third Gyrene to surpass both 1,000 rebounds and 1,000 points.
After a slow start, the Gyrenes used a 10-0 run to take a 15-5 lead. The AMU lead grew to 17 before a late three by Johnson cut the AMU advantage to 28-14 after 10 minutes of play. The Gyrenes maintained their double-digit lead in the second quarter and closed out the first half on a 10-0 run to take a 49-19 lead into halftime.
Ave Maria shot 51.2 percent in the opening half and outrebounded Johnson 25-7 over the first 20 minutes.
The game was never in doubt for the Gyrenes over the final two quarter. AMU outscored Johnson 18-13 in the third and 21-4 in the fourth to defeat the Suns 88-36. The Gyrenes shot 22 foul shots in the second half, making 17 of them. Foul trouble affected Johnson in the second half, with four players fouling out by the end of the night.
Miller finished with 17 points and 15 rebounds in 27 minutes. Daniell Weinmann had 16 points while Megan Allen finished with 12 and Macarena Corrall added 11 points. 12 difference Gyrenes scored for AMU. Megan Allen also had eight rebounds. Corral, Miller and Weinmann each had five steals.
AMU shot 46.3 percent on the night and were 22-of-31 from the free throw line.
The Gyrenes dominated points off turnovers (37-7), second chance points (31-2), bench points (31-7), and points in the paint (48-16).
Ave Maria hits the road next week for contests against Morris (Tues.) and Voorhees (S.C.) (Thu.) in South Caroline before taking on Tennessee Wesleyan on Saturday in Athens, Tenn.
