AVE MARIA, Fla. --- The Gyrene baseball team defeated 18th-ranked Webber 6-5 in game one of today's doubleheader behind a 2-run walk-off home run by Tully Allen. Webber won game two to take the three-game series.
Webber struck first in game one with a lead-off home run to start the game. Nick Wydler then singled in a run in the second to tie the game at one. The Warriors added a run in the fourth and another in the sixth to take a 3-1 advantage.
In the bottom of the sixth, an Allen RBI single brought AMU within one before a 2-run home run by Alex Perez put the Gyrenes in front 4-3.
Webber tied the game in the eighth and took a one-run lead in the ninth. After Luis Rodriguez reached on a single to left center, Allen homered over the left field fence to win it for AMU.
The Gyrenes had 11 hits in game one. Robert McMahon had a team-high three hits. Rodriguez and Allen each had two hits. Allen had three RBI and two runs.
Kavin Kroll got the win in game one. He pitched one inning and allowed one run. Noah Christopher started the game and pitched six innings of three-run ball. He struck out five. Jake Davey also took the mound for AMU and pitched two innings and allowed one run.
In game two, Webber took down the Gyrenes 27-13. After Webber scored two in the second, AMU responded with two in the bottom of the second and six in the third. Tyler Chase and Justin Hartshorne each homered in the third for AMU.
In the top of the fourth, Webber scored four runs. The Gyrenes then scored two in the bottom of the fourth and one in the bottom of the fifth. Andy Hernandez homered in the fourth and Chase hit his second homer of the game in the fifth.
Webber scored three in the sixth, five in the seventh, eight in the eighth and five in the ninth.
Hernandez had his second homerun of the game in the eighth, a two-run shot for AMU.
AMU had 20 hits, including five homeruns. Webber had 26 hits and three homeruns.
Daniel Caylor had four hits in six at-bats. Six other Gyrenes had multiple hits in game two. Eight of the nine batters for Webber had multiple hits and seven had three or more hits.
