Gyrene Baseball Walks Off on FMU

AVE MARIA, Fla.- The Ave Maria University baseball team finally broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the tenth inning to walk off with a 1-0 victory over Florida Memorial University on Wednesday afternoon. The Gyrenes have now won two of their last three contests, taking a game from the Lions in non-conference action.

Neither team was able to score in the regulation nine innings despite ample opportunities to do so. The Gyrenes left ten runners on base during the contest, while the Lions stranded seven runners. Both teams accumulated six hits in the contest, and the two pitching staffs combined to strike out 17 hitters.

On the Ave Maria side, the Gyrenes used five pitchers to record the ten-inning shutout. Kavin Kroll, Chase Barrett, Kyle Conway, Jack Zander, and Jake Davey recorded the 30 outs for AMU. Barrett went the longest with 2.2 innings on the mound, while Zander and Davey combined to toss three scoreless, hitless innings to conclude the game.

AMU's winning run in the bottom of the tenth was started by Daniel Caylor, who drew a leadoff walk. Caylor then took second on a wild pitch, and Tully Allen was intentionally walked to put runners on first and second. After a sacrifice bunt from Alex Perez put the runners on second and third, Andy Hernandez hit a sacrifice fly to center field that scored Caylor and sent the Gyrenes home happy.

Offensively, six different Gyrenes recorded one hit each in the winning effort. Five of the six hits were singles, while Robby McMahon supplied the only extra-base hit, a double. All six hits for Florida Memorial were doubles as well. Davey earned his second win of the season on the mound, retiring five straight batters in the ninth and tenth innings.

Ave Maria will take the weekend off before facing No. 6 St. Thomas University next Wednesday. The Gyrenes will host the Bobcats, with first pitch scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
