Baseball Drops Midweek Matchup Against No. 6 St. Thomas

AVE MARIA, Fla. --- The Ave Maria baseball team took on sixth-ranked St. Thomas on Wednesday afternoon at Bowie's Ballpark. The Gyrenes fell to the Bobcats 16-4 in seven innings.
 
After St. Thomas scored two runs in the top of the first inning, the Gyrenes responded with two in the bottom half of the inning to tie the game. The Gyrenes' first run came on a RBI triple by Tully Allen that plated Daniel Caylor. Then Alex Perez grounded out to second which allowed Allen to score.
 
AMU took the lead in the second inning on a Luis Rodriguez sac fly to drive in Andy Hernandez.
 
St Thomas scored three runs in the third, five in the fourth, and three in the fifth and sixth to take a 16-3 lead.
 
The Gyrenes scored a run in the seventh on a Perez RBI single up the middle to bring in Allen.
 
Five Gyrenes' had hits on the afternoon. Perez had two RBI and Allen scored two runs in the game.
 
Eight pitchers took the mound in the mid-week matchup for the Gyrenes. Justin David got the start and took the loss. He pitched three innings and allowed six runs, five of which were earned, on six hits and three walks. He had one strike out.
 
Keanu Guzman got the win for St. Thomas. He pitched six innings and allowed on earned run. He struck out eight and allowed three hits and four walks.
 
Ave Maria returns to action on Saturday when they host Doane (Neb.) at 2 p.m. at Bowie's Ballpark.
