Baseball Swept In Saturday DH At Warner

LAKE WALES, Fla. --- After winning Friday afternoon, the Ave Maria baseball team dropped both games of Saturday's doubleheader at Warner. AMU drops to 5-7 on the season and two 1-2 in The Sun after their first weekend of conference play.

The Gyrenes were unable to contain the Warner offense in the opening game, falling 14-4 in seven innings. In game two, the Gyrenes were leading 3-2 heading to the ninth before a two-out, two-RBI single by Warner gave them the walk-off win.

Tully Allen was 3-for-4 in game one with two runs scored and one RBI. Luis Rodriguez and Spencer Nelson also tallied multiple hits in the opener.

The Gyrenes had the early lead in game one, scoring a run in the first and second innings on an RBI single by Rodriguez and sac fly by Justin Hartshorne. Warner tied the game in the second with a pair of runs only to see AMU respond with two of their own in the top of the third via a Allen homerun and Andy Hernandez RBI fielder's choice.

The Royals scored three in the third, four in the fourth, two in the sixth, and three in the seventh to shorten the game to seven innings via the 10-run rule.

Jared Halteman got the start and took the loss for AMU.

In the nightcap, Warner struck first with a run in the bottom of the third. AMU scored all of their runs in the top of the fourth. With the bases loaded, Robert McMahon reach on an error which allowed Rodriguez to come around to score.  Pinch-hitter Alex Perez hit a sac fly to sore Nelson. After a walk re-loaded the bases, Hernandez scored on a wild pitch by the Royals.

AMU starter Chase Barrett held the Royals scoreless over the next three innings. He finished with six innings pitched, allowing one run on four hits and three walks. He struck out six.

Christian Whitlatch, who earned the save earlier this season when AMU defeated top-ranked Southeastern, got the first two outs of the ninth before Warner strung together a hit and error to put runners on second and third. Warner's Ronny Penalo then placed a 2-2 pitch into right center that allowed both runs to score to give Warner a 4-3 win.

The Gyrenes will need to put the hard-luck losses behind them quickly as they travel to #24 Keiser on Wednesday for a midweek contest before hosting #6 St. Thomas next weekend for a TSC series.
