Seven RBIs from Davis Not Enough in DH Sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 BABSON PARK, Fla.- The Ave Maria University softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon, losing twice to conference rival Webber International University. The Gyrenes lost the opener 11-3, then surrendered seven unanswered runs to end the game in a 10-9 decision in the nightcap.

The Warriors struck first in the opening game of the doubleheader, scoring twice in the bottom of the first inning. Two Warriors, Smith and Maggard reached on AMU errors, and Samantha Rolfe made the Gyrenes pay with a two-run double to right field. Rolfe was thrown out at third trying to stretch her double into a triple, but still had given Webber an early 2-0 lead.

Ave Maria took their first lead of the day in the top of the third, putting three runs on the board. Brooke Pierron and Morgan Grimm started the inning with singles, and Kalie Romig loaded the bases by reaching on an error. Abby Love was then hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, and after a popout, Michella Davis drove in Grimm and Romig with a single, giving the Gyrenes a 3-2 lead that would last until the sixth inning.

Webber broke the game wide open in the bottom of the sixth, scoring nine runs to turn a game that Ave Maria led with five outs to go into one that ended early due to the run rule. Mary-Margaret Maggard would start the action with a home run, the first of eight hits in the inning. Runs would also be driven in by Sabrina Hebding, Cassidy Roberts, Alyssa Rodriguez, Cockcroft, and CC Smith before Maggard drove in another run on a single to end the game.

In game two, it was the Gyrenes who scored first, putting a five-spot on the board with the use of only one hit. With two outs in the inning, Ave Maria loaded the bases on two walks and a hit-by-pitch. Two more walks to Romig and Angela Cataldo brought two runs and kept the bases loaded before Davis cleared the bases with a three-run single, giving AMU a 5-0 lead.

AMU's lead became six runs in the top of the fifth inning. Cataldo started the inning with a triple, and was promptly driven in by Davis. In the bottom half of that inning, Webber answered with three runs to cut the Ave lead to 6-3. An RBI double by Cockcroft and RBI singles from Smith and Maggard, all with two outs, allowed the Warriors to inch back closer to the Gyrenes.

Ave's lead again grew to six runs in the top of the sixth, as three runs crossed the plate for the Gyrenes. With two outs, Cataldo completed a 3-for-3 day with an RBI single that scored Paxton Hoop. Cataldo then scored on an Michella Davis RBI double, marking the fifth RBI of the day for the senior. After a passed ball, an error off the bat of Brittany Blizzard allowed Davis to score, increasing Ave Maria's lead to 9-3.

Webber's comeback began with four runs in the bottom of the sixth, a total that was aided by two Gyrene errors. An error was directly responsible for three of the four runs, with the only RBI in the inning coming on a Cockcroft groundout. Then, in the seventh, three more runs scored to give the Warriors a walk-off win. Rolfe doubled in Anna Schutzler for the first run, a single from Roberts tied the game, and a bases loaded walk to Smith gave Webber the sweep.

The next doubleheader for the Gyrenes comes on Wednesday, when AMU welcomes Warner University to the AMU Softball Field. First pitch of the conference doubleheader is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
