MONTGOMERY, Ala.- The Ave Maria University women's soccer team fell to 1-1 on the season on Sunday afternoon following a 4-0 loss to the Faulkner University Eagles. The Gyrenes return to Ave Maria with one win and one loss in their trip to Alabama.
The Eagles scored the first goal of the match in the 19th minute, when Victoria Moran found the back of the net. That 1-0 lead held until halftime, as neither team was able to get on the board in the final 26 minutes of the half.
Faulkner added three goals in the second half to pull away from the Gyrenes in the final 30 minutes. Wilston Stephen scored back-to-back goals in the 60th and 72nd minutes, with both goals assisted by Carolin Gaeher. Moran also added an assist on the first goal. Gianna Mendez finished the scoring in the 80th minute, with Kaitlin Obrero providing the assist.
The Gyrenes actually outshot Faulkner, 12-7, with both teams attempting four shots on goal. Haley Iacona was Ave Maria's most active attacker, recording three shot attempts and putting two of those attempts on goal.
Hannah Lawrence and Ally Williams both added two shots, while AMU's other two shots on goal were attempted by Lawrence and Beth Staufenberger. All four Ave Maria shots on goal were stopped by Faulkner's Megan White, who posted a shutout in the victory.
AMU's next four contests, including an exhibition game, will be played at Gyrene Field. That stretch begins with an exhibition contest against Broward College on Wednesday evening, with kickoff scheduled for 7:00 p.m. The next regular season match for the Gyrenes comes on Saturday, when Brewton-Parker College comes to town as part of a women's and men's doubleheader. The women's game will kick off at 11 a.m., with the men's game following.
