Gyrenes Knocked Off at Florida National

HIALEAH, Fla.- The Ave Maria University women's soccer team fell victim to two second half goals from the Conquistadors of Florida National University, and dropped a 2-0 decision at Goodlet Park in Hialeah on Wednesday night. The offensive-minded match saw 32 shots taken between the two teams, with just 13 total fouls called.

The Gyrenes were the more agressive team in the first 45 minutes of action, outshooting the Conquistadors 8-5. However, despite a number of solid chances, none of the eight shots could find the back of the net, leaving the match scoreless at halftime. Four Ave Maria shots - three from Meghan Precord and one from Sarah Dalton - were on target in the opening 45 minutes, but all were stopped by FNU goalkeeper Vanessa Osorio.

Florida National got on the board in the 47th minute, just under 90 seconds into the second half. A long distance shot from Juliana Oliveira curled in for the Conquistadors, giving the hosts a 1-0 lead. The assist on the play was provided by Dominique Mosley.

FNU added another goal in the 62nd minute, providing the final 2-0 margin. On a corner kick from Bethania Cruz, the ball bounced around the box before being placed in the back of the net by Jurema Magalhaes. Neither team was able to score in the final 28 minutes of the match, keeping the Florida National lead at two goals.

Precord led the Ave Maria attack on the road, providing four of the team's six shots on goal. The other two shots on goal were logged by Dalton and Beth Staufenberger. Entering the AMU scoring sheet in the shot column were Precord (4), Kelsey Samaroo (3), Sarah Dalton (2), Hannah Dalton (2), Staufenberger (1), and Celena Liguori (1).

In goal, freshman Sofia Lopez logged seven saves for the Gyrenes, a new career best. Lopez's effort included several key stops that kept AMU within striking distance. Her counterpart, Osorio, made six saves to pick up the shutout victory for the Conquistadors.

Ave Maria will play their final non-conference match of the season on Saturday, when the Gyrenes travel to North Miami to take on the Wildcats of Johnson and Wales University. Kickoff against the Wildcats, who will also play AMU in conference play in Ave Maria on October 9, is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
