NORTH MIAMI, Fla.- The Ave Maria University women's soccer team fell in their final non-conference match of the 2019 season on Saturday afternoon, dropping a 4-0 decision to the Wildcats of Johnson and Wales University. The Gyrenes will have a chance for redemption on October 9, when JWU comes to Ave Maria for a Sun Conference matchup.
The Wildcat attack was spearheaded by Savannah Jackson, who scored three of JWU's four goals en route to a hat trick. Jackson, who now has 22 goals on the season, scored in the ninth, 39th, and 83rd minutes. She scored in the ninth minute on assists by Sawyer Hall and Brianna Pineiro, while Mariah Zayas and Jasmine Blindt earned assists in the 39th. Pineiro logged her second assist of the match in the final ten minutes.
Johnson and Wales, who outshot the Gyrenes 19-12 in the match, also got another goal in the first half. In the 16th minute, Andrea Gomez capitalized on a cross from Brazil Clark and beat the keeper for her first goal of the season. Lizzy Madril was also credited with an assist on the play, which gave the Wildcats a 2-0 lead.
Ave Maria was able to log 12 shots in the losing effort, including five that tested the JWU goalkeeper. Five different Gyrenes logged one shot on goal, including Meghan Precord, Hannah Dalton, Hannah Lawrence, Ally Williams, and Beth Staufenberger. Sofia Lopez stopped nearly two-thirds of the shots against her, logging seven shots on eleven attempts on net. The freshman played all 90 minutes in net for the second match in a row. Johnson and Wales' Denise Mendoza posted a shutout for the Wildcats, turning away all five of Ave Maria's shots on goal.
The next two matches for the Gyrenes will see Ave Maria take on two of the top three teams in the nation. First, AMU will play No. 3 Southeastern on September 28 in Lakeland.
