BARTOW, Fla.- The Ave Maria University women's tennis team remained undefeated against NAIA competition on Saturday, as the Gyrenes cruised to a 7-0 sweep over the Royals of Warner University. The Gyrenes, who are receiving votes in the newest NAIA Coaches' Poll, won all six singles matches and two of the three doubles matches en route to their third consecutive win over an NAIA opponent.
Ave Maria's efforts started in doubles play, where two of the three Ave Maria teams won to earn the team the doubles point. The number one team of Julia Candiotto / Lara Teodoro won 6-4 over Andrea Silva and Christina Abeln, while AMU's number three team of Kelly Oliveira and Aethielle Kelkboom cruised to a 6-1 victory. Warner's lone victory in doubles action came at number two, where Marla Mesa Montoya and Irene Arias picked up a 6-3 victory.
In singles action, the Gyrenes swept the six singles matches to finish off the 7-0 win. AMU's players at the bottom three spots in the lineup were dominant in the win, including a 6-0, 6-0 win at number six by Nadia Mangelsdorff. Kelkboom added a 6-0, 6-3 win at the number five position, and Oliveira rolled to a 6-1, 6-3 triumph at the number four spot.
AMU continued their momentum in the top three spots of the lineup. Gabrielle Benn surrendered just five points in a 6-2, 6-3 win at the number three spot, and Teodoro claimed a 6-4, 6-4 victory at the top spot in the lineup. The only singles match to go three sets featured Candiotto and Montoya at the number two spot. AMU's Candiotto rallied from a 6-4 defeat in the first set to win the match with 6-4 and 7-6 wins in the second and third sets.
Ave Maria will face a major test on Wednesday, as the Gyrenes head across Alligator Alley for a meeting with the second-ranked Seahawks of Keiser University. Keiser has won two consecutive Sun Conference championships. Opening serve in West Palm Beach is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
