SPRINGFIELD, Mo.- The Ave Maria University golf teams concluded the Evangel Spring Invitational on Tuesday, playing the final round at the Rivercut Golf Course in Springfield, Missouri. The Gyrene men finished in fourth place among the seven teams in the field, while the women placed two golfers in the top seven of the 15-golfer field.
Ave Maria's best golfer on the day was Gabriel DeCasas, who shot a five-over 77. DeCasas finished in a tie for tenth place, moving up on the leaderboard thanks to four-shot improvement from Monday's first round. Jonah Manning finished in a tie for 14th following an 82, and Roch Aubert finished in a tie for 24th place after carding an 88. Thomas Baycroft also shot an 88 to contribute to Ave Maria's team score, and Michael Lis-Planells rounded out the group with a 95.
Kirkwood CC won the team championship, rallying from a seven-shot deficit to defeat William Woods by five shots. The teams above (Kirkwood, William Wood and Evangel) and below (College of the Ozarks, Westminster College, and Hannibal-LaGrange) the Gyrenes did not change. Ave Maria finished with a team score of 664, shooting a 329 in the first round and a 335 in the tournament's final round.
On the women's side, Delaney Southers posted the lowest round of the tournament with a 95. Southers jumped from tenth place to seventh thanks to her best round of the season. Eliana Tetzlaff was AMU's top finisher in the tournament, placing sixth after carding a 96 in the final round. AMU's effort was rounded out by Alaina Irwin, who shot a 103 in the final round en route to an eleventh place finish. The individual champion was Katelyn Swope of College of the Ozarks, who won by three shots.
The Gyrenes likely would have placed second in the team race had a fourth golfer made the trip to Missouri. College of the Ozarks easily won the team title, defeating host Evangel by 68 shots. Peru State College finished third, another 135 shots back.
Ave Maria's golf teams are done with regular season tournament play, with dual matches next on the schedule. Upon returning to Southwest Florida, the Gyrenes will prepare for a pair of matches next week. The men will face Hope College next Tuesday in Naples, and the women will face Stevenson (Maryland) on Wednesday.
