ROCKY FACE, Ga. – The Ave Maria Men's Golf team wrapped up the regular season at the Round Runner Classic March 30-31. The Gyrenes placed last in a field of 12 teams as a result of two high-scoring rounds to end the tournament.
Matt Mullen led the way for the Gyrenes in the opening round. Mullen Recorded five birdies in his first 18 holes, but his best hole was on the 13
th. Mullen, who had started the round on the 14
th hole making this his last hole of the round, knocked in the first hole-in-one of his career, logging an eagle on the par 3 hole. He finished the round 4-under-par, his best score of the season.
Alex Veneziano recorded four birdies and finished the first round at 2. Ty Kaufman was third on the team with a birdie and finished at +4. Ben Achziger also added a birdie and finished the round at +10 to round out the group.
As a team, the Gyrenes shot 12-over-par in the first round and were in ninth place. Unfortunately, the final two rounds did not go the Gyrenes way as they fell to last after the second round and could not get back up on the leaderboard in the third round.
Veneziano led the team in the second round, finishing the day with three birdies and at one-over-par. Mullen added three birdies and finished with a +8. Daniel Nycum got into the scoring quartet for the first time, carding one birdie and ending the round at 82 strokes. Kaufman rounded out the group with a birdie and finished the round with a +12.
In the final round, Mullen knocked in two birdies and finished with a +6. Nycum birdied his 10th hole and finished his final 18 at +10. Kaufman and Achziger tied at 12-over-par to round out the group on the final day. Kaufman carded one birdie while Achziger logged two.
The Gyrenes ended all three rounds at 83-over-par, 28 strokes behind Wayland Baptist and Lindsey Wilson who tied for 10
th place.
Individually, Mullen was the highest performing Gyrene, as he finished tied for 22nd place out of 63 participants. Veneziano finished in 42nd place, Kaufman finished in 58th place, Nycum finished in 60th place, and Achziger Finished in 61st place.
The Roadrunner Classic was the last tournament of the regular season as Ave Maria switches their focus to the Sun Conference. The Gyrenes are back on the links April 19-21 for The Sun Conference Championship. The tournament will be hosted at the Fountains Country Club in Lake Worth, Florida.
