JUPITER, Fla. — The Ave Maria Men's Golf Team competed in the Jupiter Collegiate Invite Monday and Tuesday, finishing in fourth place of four teams. The Gyrenes put together a stellar opening round on Monday but could not keep the pace up as they fell to the back of the pack.
The morning round on Monday was by far the best round for Ave Maria Golf in recent memory. As a team, the Gyrenes finished 6-under-par. Three of the Gyrenes finished below the course par of 70 while the fourth finished with an even 70. Alfonso Baro Rosas led the team, shooting 3-under-par. The senior carded five birdies and just one double bogey to end the round at 67. Neal Wheeler was right behind him at 2-under-par, logging four birdies to just two bogeys. Alex Veneziano also finished below par, ending the round with a score of -1. Veneziano carded three birdies to just two bogeys. Daniel Nycum rounded out the group with an even score of 70. The highlight of the round came from Nycum though as he logged an eagle on hole 13. It is the first eagle for Nycum since last year's Jupiter Collegiate Invite, when he eagled hole 2 in the second round.
At the end of the first round, Ave Maria was tied for second with Palm Beach State at 6-under. Keiser led the foursome at 16-under-par and Webber was in last at 7-over-par.
The afternoon round on Monday was not as kind to the Gyrenes. Ave Maria finished the round shooting a collective 8-over-par, 14 more strokes than the opening round. Veneziano led the team, shooting 4-under, carding five birdies to just one bogey. Eric Cherubini, who finish fifth on the team in the first round, jumped up a few strokes and finished second on the team in the afternoon with an even 70. Cherubini logged three birdies on his way to an even score. Nycum was third on the team at +3 and Baro Rosas rounded out the group with a +9. Nycum carded four birdies in his round and Baro Rosas logged two.
Ave Maria held onto third place after the second round as Webber shot an even score in the second round, bringing them within five strokes of the Gyrenes. The top two teams started to pull away in the second round. Palm Beach State shot a combined 18-under-par but still remained in second place. Keiser held onto first place with a score of -12 in the second round, giving them a total score of 28-under-par.
The Gyrenes shaved off seven strokes in the final round on Tuesday, shooting a collective 1-over-par. Cherubini led the group in the third round, shooting 2-under-par, carding four birdies to two bogeys. Baro Rosas was second on the team, also finishing below par with a -1. Baro Rosas carded five birdies, tying his mark from the first round. Veneziano took third on the team with an even 70. Veneziano logged six birdies, the most in a single round from a Gyrenes this tournament but had a four bogeys and a double bogey to balance him out. Wheeler rounded out the group with a score of +4, carding two birdies.
Ave Maria slipped into last place after the final round, as Webber shot 9-under-par on Tuesday and snatched third place. Webber finished the tournament 2-under-par while the Gyrenes finished 3-over-par. Keiser put together their best round of the tournament on Tuesday, shooting 18-under-par and finishing the two days with a score -46. Palm Beach State shot 10-under-par on Tuesday and finished the tournament in second place with a score of -34.
Veneziano was the highest placing individual Gyrene, finishing tied for ninth with a score of -5. Cherubini was second on the team, finishing in 16
th place with a score of 2-over-par. Baro Rosas finished tied for 18
th with a score of +5 and was followed by Wheeler in 23
rd place with a score of +11. Nycum did not finish the tournament as he did not play the final round on Tuesday.
Ave Maria is back on the links one more time in the fall season before taking their winter break. The Gyrenes will head up to Lakeland to compete in the Southeastern Invite at the Grasslands Golf and Country Club. The tournament will take place between October 26-27.
