Men's Tennis Sweeps Florida National

AVE MARIA, Fla.- The Ave Maria University men's tennis team won their third straight match on Monday afternoon, sweeping the Florida National University Conquistadors, 7-0, at the AMU Tennis Facility. Ave Maria won all nine matches - six singles and three doubles - on the day, to pick up their first ever victory over FNU after defeats in 2019 and 2020.

The Gyrenes quickly clinched the doubles point, winning two of the three matches by 6-1 margins. Nicholas Hofmeister and Luca Cirenza rolled to a 6-1 victory at the number one spot, while Guilherme Bento and Felipe Amorim cruised to a 6-1 win at the third position. Carlos Thireau and Alejandro Viedma secured the sweep in doubles play in the closest match of the day, beating FNU's number two team, 6-3, at the number two position.

Ave Maria wasted little time in clinching match, winning at the top three spots in the lineup to earn the needed four points. The first match to finish came at the number two spot, where Hofmeister won, 7-5, 6-0. The only three-set match was between Umberto Particelli and Bento at the number one position. Particelli won the first set, 6-3, but Bento rallied for wins of 6-3 in both of the final two sets. The clinching point was provided by Thireau, who won 7-6, 6-3 at the number three spot.

In the final three singles matches, all three Gyrenes won easily, with none of the Florida National players winning more than two points in a set. Cirenza won at the number four spot, 6-2, 6-0, and Viedma added a 6-2, 6-2 win at the number five position. Felipe Amorim finished off the sweep with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Jan Rysanek at the number six position. 

AMU's final match of the week will come on Wednesday afternoon against an NCAA Division III opponent. The Gyrenes will travel to the USTA National Campus in Orlando for a meeting with Bethel University from Minnesota. AMU's final match against an opponent from outside The Sun Conference is scheduled for an opening serve time of 1:00 p.m.
