Gyrenes Clinch Conference Tournament Berth with Win

AVE MARIA, Fla.- The Ave Maria University men's tennis team secured a postseason berth on Saturday afternoon, clinching a spot in The Sun Conference Tournament with a 6-1 win over the Warner University Royals.

The win over the Royals, who were receiving votes in the most recent NAIA Coaches' Poll, ensured that Ave Maria will be in the number four seed in The Sun Conference Tournament, which will mark AMU's second ever trip to the postseason.

Ave Maria took an early lead in the match, winning two of the three doubles matches to claim the doubles point. Warner did win the top doubles match, as the team of Bruno Pessoa and Felipe Gil claimed a 6-1 win over Guilherme Bento and Carlos Thireau.

The Gyrenes, however, answered with decisive victories at the number two and three doubles positions. Former National Player of the Week Nicholas Hofmeister and Luca Cirenza won 6-2 at the second spot, while Felipe Amorim and Alejandro Viedma were victorious by the same score at the third spot.

In three of the six singles matches, Ave Maria rallied from a one set deficit to claim the win. At the number two position, Cirenza battled back from a 6-0 defeat in the first set, winning the final two sets 6-4 and 7-5. At the third spot, Hofmeister lost 6-2 in the first set, but was dominant in the final two sets, 6-1, 6-2, to earn the win. Finally, Viedma picked up a 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 victory over Bruno Carvalho at the number five singles position.

Thireau and Amorim earned Ave Maria's other two singles wins, emerging triumphant at the fourth and sixth singles positions. Thireau's win, 6-2, 6-4, clinched the match for the Gyrenes at the number three spot, while Amorim has AMU's most dominant win of the day, 6-0, 6-2 over Antonio Santos. Warner's lone win was provided by Bruno Pessoa, who won 6-0, 6-3 at the top singles position.

The Gyrenes will finish the regular season on Saturday, as the Gyrenes travel to Savannah, Georgia for a meeting with the Bees of SCAD-Savannah. AMU has won two of the past three meetings between the two programs, but will be in search of the Gyrenes' first ever win over the Bees in Savananh. Opening serve of the final match of The Sun Conference regular season is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at the Bacon Park Tennis Courts.
