AVE MARIA, Fla. – The Ave Maria University baseball used a late-inning rally, with three runs in both the seventh and eighth innings, to post its second straight victory with an 8-6 win over Florida Memorial on Tuesday afternoon at Bowie's Ballpark.
The Gyrenes battled back from an early 2-0 deficit to claim an 8-2 edge before having to hold off a final push by Florida Memorial in the top of the ninth – which saw the Lions score four runs before making the final out with the tying run at the plate.
Luis Rivera drove in a pair in the top of the first to give Florida Memorial a 2-0 edge. Ricardo drove in his first run of the game on a single in the bottom of the first to trim the lead to 2-1. Senior Clayton Stanley cranked his fifth home run of the season over the right field wall in the bottom of the fourth to deadlock the score at 2-2.
AMU took the lead for good with three runs in the seventh on a pair of run scoring singles. Ricardo added his second run-scoring hit and Jeffery Cardazzone plated two on a single to center – putting Ave Maria ahead 5-2.
The Gyrenes rally in the eighth after three consecutive hitters reached to load the bases with one out. Kolby Blanchard drove in the first run when he was hit by a pitch, forcing home Hayden Sullivan. Ricardo drove in another with a sacrifice fly and senior Ethan Bergkamp closed out the inning with an RBI single – giving AMU an 8-2 advantage.
The win, which marked the second straight for AMU, improves its record to 13-23. Florida Memorial slips to 11-17 with the loss.
Senior Alex Perez scored three times in the win for AMU, while Blanchard reached base in each of his five plate appearances and stole three bases.
Freshman Carter Sullivan (2-2) earned the victory for AMU after 3.1 innings of solid relief work. The right hander did not allow a hot or a run while striking out one and walking another.
AMU returns to conference play this weekend with a three-game set at Bowie's Ballpark vs. No. 14 St. Thomas University. The Gyrenes and Bobcats get underway on Friday, April 9 with first pitch set for 3 p.m. EDT.
