Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Lawlor Sets School Record Despite Loss

BABSON PARK, Fla. — The Ave Maria Gyrenes' Men's Soccer team lost their sixth game in a row Wednesday afternoon losing 4-0 to the Webber Warriors. Despite allowing four goals, Rhys Lawlor made 21 saves, shattering the previous record for saves in a game held by himself and James Sterling at 13.

Webber jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first 13 minutes of the game with two goals from Joseph O'Sullivan just two minutes apart from each other. O'Sullivan came into the game tied for most goals on the team, but not is the Warriors leading scorer this season with seven goals on the year.

Webber grabbed a third goal in the final seconds of the first half, with Luke Piveral scoring on a pass from Ori Sela. The goal came with only four ticks left on the clock and was really demoralizing to the Gyrenes.

In the second half, the Warriors came out of the gate with the same ferocity they had in the first half and Piveral scored their final goal of the game in the 56th minute.

Aside from allowing four goals, Lawlor was really good in net, blocking 21 shots, a new Ave Maria record. Lawlor had tied the previous high, set my James Sterling in 2010, last March in a game against the Florida College Falcons, but now has sole possession of most saves in a game by a Gyrene.

Offensively, the Gyrenes could not get anything started. They managed just 12 shots with only five of those on goal and stopped by Webber goalies Fabricio Verdun and Gianni Honsel. AMU's effort did not compare to Webber's output of 40 shots and 25 on goal.

With the loss, Ave Maria falls to 4-6 on the season and 0-4 in SUN Conference play. Their next match is Saturday, October 15, at home against the Warner Royals. Warner has already defeated the Gyrenes once this year, beating them 5-1 in Lake Wales in September, so Ave Maria will be looking for their revenge and their first SUN win.
