THOMASVILLE, Ga.- The Ave Maria University men's soccer team's struggles in Sun Conference play continued on Tuesday morning, as the Gyrenes fell 7-0 to the Night Hawks of Thomas University at the TU Soccer Complex in Thomasville. AMU found themselves in a hole less than seven minutes into the match, and could never get anything going against the Night Hawks, who moved back to .500 on the season at 5-5-2.
All seven of Thomas' goals came from a different player, beginning with Cavan Daley in the seventh minute on an assist from Connor Parry. Thomas would add three more goals before halftime, opening up a 4-0 lead. Alex Ruane scored the second goal in the 14th minute, and Kieran McCombe added another in the 38th. The first half scoring was concluded by Stanley Hooker, who found the back of the net in the 44th minute on an assist from Ruane.
Thomas scored three more times in the final 45 minutes to account for the 7-0 final score. Lucas Morales opened the second half scoring with a goal assisted by Giacomo Bacigalupo in the 61st minute. Diego Sanchez added the sixth goal unassisted in the 82nd minute, and Ryan Sims put the final goal in the back of the net in the 88th minute, with Morales assisting on the afternoon's seventh goal.
In total, Thomas outshot the Gyrenes by a 23-4 margin, and were responsible for 14 of the game's 15 shots on goal. The lone shot on goal attempted by the Gyrenes was provided by Diego Heredia, whose shot was saved by Jorge Gonzalez in the 63rd minute. Heredia took two of AMU's four shots, with the other two coming from Juan Parra and Grant Goduti. It was a physical game on Tuesday morning, with 33 total fouls whistled and five yellow cards handed out.Â
The Gyrenes are not eliminated from Sun Conference Tournament contention, but would need to win each of their last two matches, and get help elsewhere in the conference. The first of those matches comes Saturday, when the Gyrenes head to Lakeland to take on Southeastern University, who was receiving votes in the most recent NAIA Coaches' Poll. Kickoff from Lakeland in Ave Maria's final road match of the season is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
