Southeastern Too Much for Men's Soccer

LAKELAND, Fla. — The Ave Maria University men's soccer team lost their ninth game in a row, falling to the Southeastern Fire 6-0. The Gyrenes were outshot 31-4 and did not register a shot on goal.

In the first half, the Fire scored their first pair of goals in the 19th minute, scoring the goals only 24 seconds apart from each other. Both goals were headers off crosses that got past the AMU defense. That was the only scoring done in the first half, sending the Gyrenes into halftime only down two.

In the second half however, the Fire dominated the Gyrenes and put the game out of reach. Southeastern scored four goals while holding Ave Maria to just one shot that was blocked by the Fire defense. The Fire scored their final goal with just two minutes remaining off a rebound from a previous shot.

With the loss, AMU falls to 4-9 overall, 0-7 in conference play and officially eliminated from SUN Conference Tournament contention. Their final game of the season is Saturday, October 29, when the Gyrenes will host the SCAD Bees for Senior Day. While the Gyrenes are out of the playoffs, they could play spoiler Saturday and keep the Bees out as well with a win. Kickoff is set for noon with Senior Day festivities prior to the match.
