THOMASVILLE, Ga. — The Ave Maria University women's soccer team lost a tough match Saturday to the Thomas Night Hawks, falling 3-1. The Night Hawks proved to be too much for the Gyrenes early in the game and cruised to their victory.
The shots were even at six apiece when Thomas broke the scoreless tie with a goal by Janae Scott in the 38th minute. Two and a half minutes later, the Night Hawks lit up the scoreboard again and took a 2-0 lead with a goal by Ali Baca. Thomas held Ave Maria shotless for the remaining four minutes of the half and took their two-goal lead into halftime.
In the second half, the Night Hawks kept the pressure up and outshot the Gyrenes 9-4 for the first 25 minutes. They finally cashed in on their 10th shot and upped their lead to three goals.
With just a little over 10 minutes left on the game clock, the Gyrenes finally got on the board with Liz Wolf scoring her fifth goal of the season off a great pass from Madelyn Krause, who got her third assist of the season.
Unfortunately, Ave Maria couldn't get two more goals in the final 10 minutes and Thomas walked away with a 3-1 victory.
With the loss, the Gyrenes fall to 4-6-4 overall and 1-4-1 in conference play with four points in the standings. They are tied with the St. Thomas Bobcats for sixth place in the standings which is the last team to get into the SUN Playoffs, but the Bobcats own the tiebreaker by having a goal differential that is four goals better than the Gyrenes.
Ave Maria is on the road for their final two games of the season, first with a trip up to Lake Wales to take on the Warner Royals Tuesday, October 25, then closing the season out at West Palm Beach against the Keiser Seahawks.
