AVE MARIA, Fla.- The Ave Maria University women's tennis team got back in the win column on Friday afternoon, dominating a top-40 team in the nation in the Spirit of Ottawa University from Arizona. The Gyrenes swept the three doubles matches, then took three straight singles matches to end the day with a 4-0 victory, which marked Ave Maria's second win of the season over a nationally recognized opponent.
The Gyrenes were dominant in doubles play, surrendering just six points over the three matches. Teodoro and Barandas won their second doubles match of the week with a 6-4 win over OUAZ's top team of Giulia Leali and Johanna Sotelo-Mena. Andrea Rodriguez Oria and Julia Candiotto cruised to a shutout win of 6-0 at the number two spot, and the team of Katie Fuller and Aethielle Kelkboom completed the sweep with a 6-2 triumph.
In a battle of top 50 players in the nation, Teodoro was dominant against Ottawa's Leali. The No. 22 player in the nation rolled to a 6-2, 6-2 win over the 47th ranked player at the top singles spot. Teodoro's doubles partner also continued her winning ways in singles play, as Barandas rolled in her match at the number four singles spot, beating Paulette Careaga 6-2, 6-0.
Andrea Oria Rodriguez won the most entertaining match of the day, beating the No. 11 player in the west region, Antonia Kostoff, in three sets. Oria Rodriguez rolled to a 6-1 win in the first set, and led 5-0 in the second set before Kostoff rallied to force a third. The Spainard steadied herself in the third set, earning the clinching point for the Gyrenes with a 6-2 win.
The only other match that got underway came at the number two spot, as Valentine Colin and Sotelo-Mena were headed to a third set when the match was called. The number five singles match between Kely Oliveira and Tiana Pritts, as well as the number six singles match between Veronica Gallardo and Ellie Hire never got going, as the match was ruled official at the clinch, due to Ottawa playing back-to-back matches on Friday.
Ave Maria's next match will see the Gyrenes take on the standard bearer of The Sun Conference, the Keiser University Seahawks. The Gyrenes will travel across the state to West Palm Beach to face the No. 2 team in the nation next Saturday, with opening serve scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
