ORLANDO, Fla.- The Ave Maria University men's tennis team remained unbeaten in the month of March, winning their fifth consecutive match with a 6-1 victory over Kansas Wesleyan University Thursday afternoon in Orlando. The Gyrenes, ranked 17th in last week's edition of the NAIA Coaches' Poll, took seven of the nine matches played from the Coyotes, moving to 7-4 on the season, including a perfect 5-0 record since the calendar turned to March.
Wins at two of the three doubles match was enough to give the doubles point to the Gyrenes. Sebastian Grijalva and Fernando Orihuela remained white hot as a team, winning their fifth consecutive match together, 6-4, at the number one spot. Adriel Bousquet and Graham Gibbs remained undefeated as a duo in the spring, also winning by a 6-4 margin. Bryce Ware and Garrison Wright earned KWU's lone win, 6-3, at the number two spot.
The top two singles match proved to be the best of the day, with the two teams each taking one. At the number one spot, KWU's Daniel Harkin and AMU's Bruno Duarte split the first two sets, with both winning by 6-3 scores. Harkin earned the lone point of the day for the Coyotes with a 10-6 in the third set tiebreaker. In the second spot, Kansas Wesleyan's Bryce Ware made Fernando Orihuela work for it, but the reigning Sun Conference Player of the Week picked up a 7-5, 6-4 victory.Â
In the bottom four singles matches, Gyrene players surrendered more than two points in a set in just one of the eight sets, rolling to the final four victories of the day. Sebastian Grijalva dominated his opponent in a 6-2, 6-0 win at the number three spot, while Guilherme Bento picked up a 6-2, 6-2 win at the fourth position. Carlos Thireau won 6-4, 6-1 at the fifth position, and Felipe Amorim finished off the action with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Braeden Lewis at the number six slot.Â
The match against Kansas Wesleyan was the first match on the schedule this week for the Gyrene men - a scheduled showdown with No. 5 Indiana Wesleyan was rained out on Wednesday. Ave Maria's next contest will be a rare home meeting with an NCAA Division I opponent, as the Bison of Bucknell University come to the AMU Tennis Complex. The Bison, who currently hold a 3-8 record, will play in Ave Maria at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday.
