Gyrene Women Roll to Fourth Straight Win

ORLANDO, Fla.- The Ave Maria University women's tennis team, fresh off their program-defining upset of SCAD-Savannah on Saturday, continued their winning ways Thursday with a 7-0 sweep of Kansas Wesleyan University. The win saw Ave Maria sweep the seven matches that were played - number three doubles and number six singles were AMU wins by default, and earned the Gyrenes their fourth consecutive win overall.

With Kansas Wesleyan's default at the number three doubles spot, the Gyrenes needed just one doubles win to claim the point, but took both with ease. Julia Candiotto and Andrea Rodriguez Orio got the nod at the number one spot for the first time this season, and rolled to a 6-2 victory. Katie Fuller and Aethielle Kelkboom finished off the doubles sweep with a sweep of their own, a 6-0 triumph over Eliza Camp and Michaela Crowe.

Singles play was much of the same story, with all five matches that were played going to the Gyrenes in straight sets. Julia Candiotto earned her first win at the top position with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Karley Benson. Valentine Colin added a win at the number two spot, 6-2, 6-0 over Michaela Crowe, while Andrea Rodriguez Oria extended her winning streak to five matches with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep at the third flight of KWU's Makenzie Archer.

Kely Oliveira nearly put together a sweep of her own, rolling past Kansas Wesleyan's number four player, Eliza Camp. Ellie Hire finished off the Ave Maria sweep with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Avery Soto at the number five spot. Hire's win moved her to 6-2 on the season, giving her a .750 winning percentage that evens her with Rodriguez Oria for the top winning percentage on the AMU roster. Abigail Rich was scheduled to play at the number six slot for Ave Maria, but a late scratch awarded the freshman a default win.

The match against Kansas Wesleyan is the only match on the schedule this week for the Gyrene women - a scheduled showdown with No. 3 Indiana Wesleyan was rained out on Wednesday. Ave Maria's next contest will come Tuesday morning against Huntington University out of the Crossroads League. Opening serve between the Gyrenes and the Forresters is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. at the AMU Tennis Complex.
