Women's Tennis Falls to (RV) Coastal Georgia

BRUNSWICK, Ga.- The Ave Maria University women's tennis team could not earn their second major win of the week, falling 4-3 to the Mariners of the College of Coastal Georgia, who were receiving votes in the most recent edition of the NAIA Coaches' Poll. Playing with 2021 All-American Lara Teodoro only appearing in doubles action, the Gyrenes won the doubles point, but lost four of the six singles matches to drop the contest to Coastal Georgia.

Wins at the second and third positions in doubles secured the first point of the day for the Gyrenes. Andrea Rodriguez Oria and Julia Candiotto rolled at the number two spot, winning 6-1 over Ana Gonzalez and Rocio Arraya. The clinching point was provided by Teodoro and Katie Fuller, who teamed together for the first time this season in a 7-6 win over Caitlyn Napier and Azul Malatini. Coastal Georgia's lone doubles win was provided by Eva Rubio and Marianela Landi, who were 7-6 winners at the top spot.

Two of Ave Maria's Brazilian-born players provided the lone singles wins. Vitoria Barandas battled to a 7-5 win in her first set against Caitlyn Napier, then fully controlled the second set, 6-1, to clinch the match at the number four spot. At the fifth position, Kely Oliveira provided Ave Maria's most convincing run of the day, a 6-4, 6-2 win over CCGA's Rocio Arraya.

Coastal Georgia took the other four singles matches, with the difference being wins in the third set of matches in the first and sixth positions. Eva Rubio defeated Julia Candiotto 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 at the top spot, while Azul Malatini picked up a 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 win over Nicolle Koop at the number six position. The wins in straight sets came at the second and third spots, and were earned by Ana Gonzalez and Marianela Landi for the Mariners.

With three matches remaining in the regular season, the Gyrenes await their fate for a spot in The Sun Conference Tournament, which mostly lies out of AMU's hands, but will require a win over Warner in the league finale on April 9 in Babson Park. Before facing the Royals in the conference finale, the Gyrenes will take on the Tritons of Eckerd College on April 7 at the AMU Tennis Complex. Opening serve of that match is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. in Ave Maria.
