Gyrenes Sweep Match to Sweep Week

AVE MARIA, Fla.- The Ave Maria University men's tennis team finished off a perfect week on Sunday afternoon, winning all nine matches in a 7-0 victory over Eastern Nazarene College at the AMU Tennis Complex. The Gyrenes easily handled their NCAA Division III foes from Massachusetts, completing the first week of March with four consecutive victories.

All three Ave Maria doubles teams won by the same 6-2 score, as the Gyrenes easily claimed the doubles point. Sebastian Grijalva and Alejandro Orihuela finished off a perfect week of doubles play with their win at the top spot, while Carlos Thireau and Felipe Amorim earned the win at the number two spot. AMU's doubles sweep was completed by the team of Graham Gibbs and Adriel Bousquet, who picked up a dominant 6-2 win over Carlos Gallardo and Simao Nobre.

In singles play, no Eastern Nazarene player earned more than four points in a single set, as the Gyrenes cruised to six straight victories in straight sets. Fernando Orihuela, playing at the number one position for the first time in over a month, picked up a 6-3, 6-4 win over Eastern Nazarene's top player, Diego Rodriguez. Ave Maria was completely dominant at the second and third positions, as Sebastian Grijalva won 6-1, 6-0 at the number two slot, and Carlos Thireau did the same in the third position.

Felipe Amorim was only slightly less dominant at the number four flight, earning a 6-1, 6-2 triumph over Carlos Sanchez. The closest of the six singles matches was Adriel Bousquet's 6-3, 6-4 win at the number five spot. AMU's sweep of their final match of the week was culminated by Graham Gibbs, who was victorious by a 6-2, 6-2 score over ENC's Diego Torres.

Following the Gyrenes' perfect week, Ave Maria will have an opportunity for their biggest win of the 2021 season on Wednesday afternoon. AMU will head to Lakeland for a neutral site match against Indiana Wesleyan University, who was ranked No. 5 in the newest NAIA Coaches' Poll. The matchup between the No. 5 Wildcats and the No. 17 Gyrenes is scheduled for a noon start on the Southeastern University campus.
