BABSON PARK, Fla.- The Ave Maria University women's tennis team wrapped up their conference schedule on Saturday afternoon with a dominant 7-0 victory over the Warner University Royals in Babson Park. The Gyrene women picked up their ninth win of the season by winning eight of nine matches against the Royals, marking the third 7-0 sweep in as many years for Ave Maria against Warner.
Wins in two of the three doubles matches gave AMU the first point of the afternoon. Andrea Rodriguez Oria and Julia Candiotto cruised to a 6-2 win over Riley Cook and Alizee Piette at the number two spot, while Aethielle Kelkboom and Katie Fuller won by the same score of Keren Alves and Carla Schneider. Warner did win their lone match of the day at the number one doubles spot, but the wins at the second and third spots were enough to clinch the doubles point.
The Gyrenes were even more dominant in singles play, winning all 12 sets, including six 6-0 victories. At the top of the lineup, Julia Candiotto won the closest of the six matches, a 6-1, 6-4 decision over Camila Matos. Valentine Colin was a 6-3, 6-1 winner at the number two spot, and Andrea Rodriguez Oria surrendered just one point overall in a 6-0, 6-1 triumph over Alizee Piette.
At the number four and number five spots, the Gyrenes did not drop a single point. Vitoria Barandas was a 6-0, 6-0 winner over Riley Cook at the fourth spot, while Kely Oliveira won by the same shutout score at the number five spot against Carla Schneider. Ellie Hire rounded out Ave Maria's sweep of the match with a 6-0, 6-2 at the sixth position against Warner's Keren Alves.
Despite the victory over the Royals, the Gyrenes finish in a tie for third place in The Sun Conference, and will miss out on The Sun Conference Tournament due to tiebreakers. Nonetheless, the Gyrenes are still considered potential qualifiers for the NAIA Championships in May, but will wait on the completion of conference tournaments for news on their postseason fate.
As far as the regular season is concerned, Ave Maria will play their last scheduled match Tuesday against the Conquistadors of Florida National University, with opening serve scheduled for 1:00 p.m. Before the match against the Conquistadors, who are receiving votes in the most recent NAIA Coaches' Poll, the AMU tennis program will honor its graduating seniors, as part of Senior Day festivities.
