Lions Topple AMU in Afternoon Match

AVE MARIA, Fla. — The Gyrenes fall to 1-8 in conference play following a 4-0 loss to the Florida Memorial Lions. AMU managed six shots with two being on goal Wednesday afternoon.

The midweek contest, like a couple other matches this season, started after an hour and a half delay due to inclement weather in the Miami Gardens.

Once the game did get underway, it only took Florida Memorial 14 minutes to open the scoring. That was one of only three shots directed on goal by both teams in the opening 45 minutes, with the two goalies stopping the other two.

In the second half, FMU began to pile it on, scoring goals in the 57th, 62nd and 69th minutes. Ave Maria had a late push in the last ten minutes of the game, taking three shots with one of them on goal, but none found the back of the net and the game ended with FMU on top 4-0.

Ave Maria stays on the road this weekend as they make the trip up to Savannah, Georgia, to take on the SCAD Bees. The Gyrenes lost the first match of the season to the Bees 2-1 but did score their first goal in conference play in that game with Levi Orlando connecting on a cross from Cade Williams. That game is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. and will be broadcast on the Sun Digital Network. The Gyrenes are back at home Wednesday, October 18, when they host the Warner Royals, the lone team they have beaten this season.
