MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — Ave Maria was officially eliminated from postseason contention following a 3-0 loss to the St. Thomas Bobcats combined with a win for the Webber Warriors earlier in the day.
Much of the game was spent fending off a St. Thomas attack that took 17 shots, eight of them on goal. Ave Maria responded with only three shots themselves, two on goal, and none in the second half.
The Bobcats recorded the first seven shots, only one of which was on goal and stopped by Rhys Lawlor. However, STU connected on their next shot on a goal from Federico Testoni and made it 1-0.
The shots cooled down from the Bobcats after that and Ave Maria even had the advantage in the final minutes of the first half, outshooting the Bobcats 3-2 in the final 18 minutes. Cade Williams took both shots on goal for Ave Maria, both of which were unfortunately saved by Franco Acerbi.
Padraic Pierson took the final shot for Ave Maria that went high.
In the second half, it was all St. Thomas. Ave Maria did not get one shot in the final 45 minutes of the match. The Bobcats got their second goal at the 63rd mark and their third and final goal in the 80th minute.
With the loss, the Gyrenes fall to 2-14-1 and 2-11 in conference play. Combined with a Webber victory over the SCAD Bees earlier in the day, Ave Maria is officially eliminated from playoff contention, securing the six teams that will make the conference tournament in November.
AMU has one more game on their schedule: Saturday, October 28, against Webber. It is senior day for the Gyrenes, and all five seniors will be honored before the game. The game will be broadcast on the Sun Digital Network.
