Another D2 Team Topples AMU Women

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- The Ave Maria University women's tennis team dropped a second match to an NCAA Division II opponent on Monday, falling 5-2 to the Sailfish of Palm Beach Atlantic University in West Palm Beach. The Gyrenes swept three doubles matches, but then dropped five of six singles matches to fall to the hosts. Monday's match was the second-ever meeting between the schools, and the first since the 2014 season.

The match started well for the Gyrenes, who claimed wins in all three doubles matches. Vitoria Barandas and Valentine Colin started the effort with a 6-1 win at the number one spot, while the team of Aethielle Kelkboom and Abigail Rich clinched the doubles point with a 6-2 win at the third flight. The closest match came at the second position, where the Ave Maria team of Andrea Rodriguez Oria and Regina Ruiz clinched AMU's sweep with a 6-3 victory.

Momentum shifted to the Sailfish in the singles matches, as Palm Beach Atlantic won all but one match in straight sets. The lone Ave Maria win was provided by Vitoria Barandas, who picked up a point at the third position with a 6-3, 6-3 win over PBA's Elvira Edstrom. The closest match otherwise came at the fifth spot, where Aethielle Kelkboom suffered a 7-5, 6-4 defeat.

Monday's match was Ave Maria's final scheduled match in the month of February. The schedule will resume March 1, when the Gyrenes play in the first of four neutral site matches during the month of March. The first of these matches will see the Gyrenes head to Orlando to take on another NCAA Division II opponent, Davenport University. Opening serve of that match is set for 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 1.
