Women's Tennis' Tournament Run Ends

MOBILE, Ala.- The Ave Maria University women's tennis team could not continue their historic national tournament run for another day, falling in the national quarterfinals, 4-3, to Tennessee Wesleyan University. The script for AMU's final match of the season was similar to the Gyrenes' win in the round of 16, with a flipped doubles point turning the tide against Ave Maria.

Tennessee Wesleyan jumped out to a lead with the doubles point, winning the matches at the second and third flights with ease. The team of Merecedes Chasset and Natacha Mesa claimed victory at the second flight, 6-3, while Astrid Staksrud and Julieta Beltramino did the same at the third flight. AMU's top team of Lara Teodoro and Vitoria Barandas had a chance to win at the top flight, but their match was halted due t the clinch with the score tied at 5.

All six singles matches were finished in straight sets, with the Gyrenes and Bulldogs each claiming three victories. AMU's victorious players were Andrea Rodriguez Oria, Barandas, and Aethielle Kelkboom, who won at the second, third, and sixth flights, respectively. Rodriguez Oria was a 6-2, 6-4 winner at the second flight, while Barandas earned her third overall win with a 6-2, 6-3 triumph. Kelkboom picked up her first win of the week with a 6-3, 6-3 win at the sixth flight.

Ave Maria's best chance to claim a fourth win and move to the national semifinals was likely at the top spot, where Teodoro matched up with Oliva Alcala. Teodoro took the first set to the tiebreaker before falling 7-5, then dropped a narrow 6-4 decision in the second set. Tennessee Wesleyan added wins at the fourth and fifth singles flights to move on to Friday's national semifinal.

AMU's season ends as one of the best in school history, regardless of sport. The women were the first Gyrenes to advance to the national quarterfinals following Wednesday's win over Lindsey Wilson, the first postseason win in program history.
