Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women’s Soccer Stifled by Seahawks

AVE MARIA, Fla. — The Ave Maria Women's Soccer team put up a good fight against the number two team in the country, but ultimately could not capitalize on opportunities as they fell to the Keiser Seahawks 3-0.

The scoring started early for the Seahawks. In the seventh minute, Keiser's Lauren Riley put a sharp angle shot past goalkeeper Emma Schweitzer for the first goal of the game.

13 minutes later, the Gyrenes got back-to-back good looks in an attempt to tie the game. Graduate student Kana Mateaki took the first shot that was stopped by the Keiser goalie, Maude Rouanet.

A couple of minutes later, Claire Wrobleski got the best chance of the night for the Gyrenes. The freshman from Montana received a through ball from Mateaki and ran past the two defenders covering her. Rouanet ran out the meet her at the top of the penalty area, which Wrobleski was able to side step. Wrobleski then took a shot at an open goal, but at the last possible second, the ball was knocked out of bounds by a charging Keiser defender to protect their lead. That was the last shot the Gyrenes would take in the half.

In the 43rd minute, Keiser doubled their lead on a long shot from Ellen Maund outside of the penalty area that tipped off the hands of Schweitzer and into the top right corner of the goal.

In the second half, the Gyrenes took two more shots on goal and one off target. Both shots on goal were from Rachel Dalton but were both turned away by Rouanet.

In the 57th minute, Keiser scored their third and final goal off the boot of Maria Vilhena. It was the only shot on goal from the Seahawk in the second half. Keiser took four more shots, but all of them went wide of the net.

Wednesday night was only the second game this season the Gyrenes were outshot by their opponent, with Keiser leading the shots 14-5. It is also the first time this year Ave Maria trailed in shots on goal, with the Seahawks having an 8-4 advantage in that category as well.

With the loss, Ave Maria falls to 5-2-3 and 2-1-2 in conference play. Ave Maria falls to fourth place in the conference, one point behind Southeastern. The Fire beat the St. Thomas Bobcats in the only other Sun Conference match Wednesday night, which catapulted them over the Gyrenes.

Ave Maria stays home for their next match Saturday, October 19, against the Florida Memorial Lions. Saturday is senior day and the Gyrenes will honor all 17 seniors before the start of the match. Kickoff is set for 11 a.m. and the senior day festivities will start around 10:40 a.m. The game will be streamed live on the Sun Digital Network.
