Women’s Soccer Draws with FMU on Senior Day

AVE MARIA, Fla. — The Ave Maria Women's Soccer team played to a scoreless tie with the Florida Memorial Lions Saturday on senior day. The Gyrenes took more shots than the Lions, however, most of Ave Maria's shots were off target.

Ave Maria's best opportunity of the game came in the 14th minute in the first half. Kana Mateaki broke away from the defense and was closing in on the goal. She took her shot from just outside the penalty area, but the ball clanged off the right post and bounced away. Before a Gyrene could collect the rebound, a Lion cleared the ball.

Florida Memorial registered more shots on goal than Ave Maria in the first half, but Emma Schweitzer was there to make all three saves.

In the second half, Ave Maria took two shots on goal, but both were turned away. The Gyrenes took two more shots off target. Florida Memorial only got one shot on goal that was saved by Schweitzer.

At the end of the match, Ave Maria outshot Florida Memorial 12-9, but the shots on goal were even at four apiece.

With the tie, the Gyrenes' record moves to 5-2-4 and 2-1-3 in conference play. They have nine points in the standings which ties them with Southeastern for third in the conference. Ave Maria has tiebreaker over Southeastern having won the head-to-head match against the Fire on September 14.

The Gyrenes are on the road for the next game as they travel up to Hardeeville, South Carolina, to take on the SCAD Bees. SCAD is second in the conference and ranked 14th in the country. If completed, it will be the first full road game for the Gyrenes since September 25, with their games on October 2, 9 and 12 either being postponed or canceled due to rain. The game will be streamed live on the Sun Digital Network.
