LAKE WALES, Fla.- The Ave Maria University men's soccer team could not get out of their scoring rut on Saturday, dropping a 1-0 decision to the Royals of Warner University in Lake Wales. After a 3-3 match two and a half weeks ago at Gyrene Field, just one goal was scored Saturday night in Polk County. The match marked the fourth straight scoreless effort for the Gyrenes, who have been competitive in each of those four contests, allowing just five total goals.
Ave Maria found themselves trailing for the majority of the match, as Warner scored what proved to be the game-winner in the 18th minute. Filip Mo provided the lone goal for the Royals, finishing on an assist from Vlad Andersen. Despite 42 total shots and 19 shots on goal between the two teams, the Mo goal was the only one, giving Warner a 1-0 victory that ended Ave Maria's three-match unbeaten streak in the series between the schools.
Despite not scoring, the Gyrenes were busy on the offensive end, attempting 25 total shots and getting eight corner kick opportunities. Jael Parraga, who did not come off the field, was Ave Maria's most active attacker, recording seven shots with six shots on goal. Mateo Rolon and Jerron Dopwell were both active as well, both adding six total shots - five shots on goal for Rolon and four for Dopwell. Balsa Medenica also added multiple shots in the losing effort.
Goalkeeper Andrija Vujakovic did what he could to keep the Gyrenes in the match, keeping the Royals from adding an insurance goal in the final 70 minutes and ending the match with nine saves. Despite Ave Maria's current 1-7-2 record, the freshman from Serbia currently holds a 1.47 goals against average, a mark that would rank as the best average in school history if he maintains it for the remainder of the season.
AMU will look to end their current seven match winless streak on Wednesday, as the Gyrenes face the Mighty Banyans of New College of Florida for the second time this season. Ave Maria will be looking to avenge a 1-0 loss to New College last month on the road. Kickoff of the non-conference tilt is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Wednesday.
