Women’s Soccer Sweeps Warner

AVE MARIA, Fla. — The Ave Maria Women's Soccer team got back in the win column Saturday morning as they took down the Warner Royals 2-0. The win snaps a three-game tie streak for the Gyrenes, which was the longest such streak in AMU history.

Ave Maria dominated possession in the first half, outshooting Warner 10-3 in the opening 45 minutes. The Gyrenes directed five of those ten shots on goal, but they were all turned aside by the Warner keeper.

Of the Royals' three shots, only one was on goal. Their first shot was blocked by an Ave Maria defender while the second shot went wide right. The third and final shot was in the final minute of the half from about 40 yards out. It was high arcing kick that Ave Maria goal keeper Emma Schweitzer collected right in front of the goal just as time expired.

In the second half, the Gyrenes kept up the offensive pressure and finally cashed in with two goals.

Rachel Dalton scored the first goal in the 50th minute. Ava Conforti dribbled the ball to right side of penalty area and crossed to Dalton who was crashing the net. Dalton headed the ball down towards the bottom left corner of the net and beat the keeper for the first goal of the game.

For Dalton, that is her second goal of the season and 19th of her career. She is now tied with Anne Bateman (2013-15) for the third most career goals in program history. The goal also gives her two points bringing her career total to 51 and passing Bateman for the second most in school history. She is now just 11 away from tying her sister Emily Dalton (2017-21) for the most points as a Gyrene.

Ave Maria wasn't finished scoring though as they struck one more time later in the half. This time it was from graduate student Kana Mateaki in the 81st minute. Mateaki snagged a loose ball and showed off the speed outrunning two defenders towards the goal and firing a ball passed a charging keeper.

It is Mateaki's fifth goal this season and the 24th of her NAIA career.

In total, Ave Maria outshot Warner 23-5 and had a 12-1 advantage on shots on goal.

With the win, Ave Maria snaps a three-game tie streak and improves to 5-1-3. It is also the first match since September 18, also against Warner, that Gyrenes have scored multiple goals.

The win was part of a quadruple header for Ave Maria athletics, with the Gyrenes coming on top in every event/game. The other three wins were Men's Cross Country team finishing first in the Ave Maria Invitational, Volleyball defeating Webber, and Football beating Thomas.

Ave Maria is on the road for their next game as they travel up to Sarasota to take on the New College of Florida Mighty Banyans. The two teams met earlier this season on September 21 and played to a 1-1 tie. Claire Wrobleski scored the goal for the Gyrenes. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. and the game can be live streamed on the Sun Digital Network.
