Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men’s Basketball Falls to Mobile

LAKELAND, Fla. — The Ave Maria Men's Basketball team came up empty in their back-to-back neutral site games in Lakeland as they fell to the Mobile Rams 91-73. The Gyrenes never had the lead in Saturday's game and went cold from the floor in the final five minutes of the game.

Mobile led from the jump, hitting the first three baskets to get out to a seven-point lead. The lead would only grow from there as the Rams got out to multiple double-digit leads in the first half.

In contrast to last season, the Gyrenes were outperformed behind the three point line. Ave Maria went 4-for-10 from downtown while Mobile hit nine of 15 shots from beyond the arc. The big disparage in threes is what led to Mobile's big lead.

The second half was more of the same against Ave Maria. While the Gyrenes did hit more threes than the Rams did in the second half, Ave Maria missed a lot of shots as well that allowed the Rams' lead to grow.

In the final five minutes of the game, Ave Maria went 3-for-11 from the field and 1-for-5 from behind the arc. Mobile on the other hand hit four of their six shots, two from three point land, and connected on seven more free throws to end the game on a 17-9 run.

Ave Maria had four players in double-figures Saturday, with Jack Watkins leading the bunch with 12. Jonathan Effertz was right behind hit at 11 and Nick Filchner and Noryen Lasley were tied with 10.

With the loss, Ave Maria falls to 2-2 on the season.

The Gyrenes are finally home for their next game as they take on the Florida National Conquistadors. Tipoff is set for 7:30 in the home opener against FNU and the game will be streamed live on the Sun Digital Network.
