Swim Splits Double Dual

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — The Ave Maria swim team split their double dual meet Saturday, falling to the St. Thomas Bobcats but beating the College of the Florida Keys Tuga Swim Team. Unlike a tri-meet where all the teams are placed one through three after the meet, a double dual meet is when the schools compare their scores at the end of the day against the others separately.

Both the men's and women's teams beat the Tuga Swim team, with the men winning 170-46 and the women winning 171-17. Against the Bobcats, the men fell 226-170 and women fell 217-171.

The highlight of the meet was in the third event of the day in the women's 1000 yard freestyle. Just a week after Hannah Nelson set a new school record against Thomas, Delany Weisbruch blew her time out of the water in her first ever time swimming the 1000 yard freestyle. The freshman from Niceville, Florida, beat Nelson's time by almost 24 seconds, clocking in at 11:16.93. Another freshman also beat Nelson's record, with Anna Szucs finishing at 11:36.59.

Weisbruch set a personal best later in the meet, finishing third in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:34.08.

The men had one personal best in the meet that wasn't a first time swim. Freshman Joe Adames finished the 200-yard breaststroke with a time a 2:33.04, beating his time from the dual meet against Thomas by eight seconds.

Individually, the women had eight top three finishes in the meet. The men had two top three finishes.

As a team, the women had a couple top three relay finishes, with the highest place being second in the 400 yard freestyle relay. The men's best relay finish was fourth place.

The Gyrenes are back in the pool Saturday, November 9, against the Barry Buccaneers. It is a home meet for Ave Maria, which they will host at the FGCU Aquatics Center in Fort Myers. The dual meet will begin at 11 a.m.
