Swimming and Diving Competes in Final Dual Meet

FORT MYERS, Fla. — The Ave Maria Swimming and Diving team competed in their final dual meet of the regular season Friday as they took on Indian River State College. Both the men's and women's teams fell to The River, but the Gyrenes still broke a few school records and gained some confidence heading into the Sun Conference Championships.

Maddie Lasnoski set both new records for the Women's team in the 100-yard breaststroke. In the first 50 yards off the block, the sophomore from Hubertus, Wisconsin, clocked in at 32.08 seconds, breaking the previous best split time by 19 hundredths of second. Lasnoski kept the record pace up and broke the record for the whole 100-yards as well with a time of 1:09.08. Lasnoski placed third in the race, earning Ave Maria one of their seven third-place finishes for the meet.

Four swims during the day met the requirements for the NAIA B-cut, putting the Gyrenes in the conversation for National Championship qualifications. Maryanna Matista hit the B-cut in the 200-yard freestyle and the 100-yard butterfly, Mimi Estrada made the cut in the 200-yard butterfly and Gabby Darakchieva made the cut for the 100-yard backstroke.

On the men's side, Nathan Ramirez set the lone school record for the Gyrenes on Friday. In the inaugural season of Ave Maria Diving, Ramirez beat his initial score in the 1-meter dive from November and set a new record of 119.92.

As a team, the Gyrenes had one second-place finish and eight third place finishes. Sam Pilkington recorded the lone second-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 56.05 seconds.
Jack Keyser hit the only NAIA B-cut for the team on Friday in the 400-yard individual medley.

The dual meet concluded the regular season for the Gyrenes who now turn their focus to the Sun Conference Championships. Last year, the Gyrenes had their best showing at the Championships in the program's young history, with Darakchieva winning the first ever gold medal and the women finishing fourth overall out of nine teams.

The Championships will take place from February 5-7 in Ocala, Florida, at the Florida Aquatics Swimming and Training Center.
