PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. — The Ave Maria Swimming and Diving team hosted and participated in their first ever triple dual meet, which is when one team competes head-to-head against three other teams at the exact same time. The Gyrene men won two of their three dual meets on Saturday, beating New College of Florida and Life and falling to Barry, while the Gyrene women swept the day and won all three meets.
Before the start of the meet, the Gyrenes celebrated senior day and honored the 12 upperclassmen on the team.
On the men's side, the Gyrenes blew the Mighty Banyans out of the water 179-16 and got a close win over the Running Eagles 131-125. The men's loss to the Buccaneers was by a narrow margin, falling 154-105.
The men had a couple of solo first place finishes with Sam Pilkington winning the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 57.32 seconds and Eli Soderberg winning the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:57.76. Nine other swims landed a Gyrene on the podium and contributed to their high scores against each team.
In the two relay races, the Gyrene men won the 200-yard medley relay, beating Life by over half a second, and finished third in the 400-yard freestyle relay.
On the women's side, the Gyrenes dominated their competition, beating the Mighty Banyans 161-57, the Buccaneers 143-86 and the Running Eagles 138-120.
The Gyrenes took down one school record in the meet, with Delaney Weisbruch clocking a time of 2:11.78 in the 200-yard butterfly. That qualified Weisbruch for the NAIA B-cut and beat the previous school record by 0.26 of a second.
Weisbruch won the 200-yard butterfly with that time, and it was one of the four solo wins for the Gyrenes. Weisbruch also won the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:14.65, Mimi Estrada won the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:00.21 and Gabby Darakchieva won the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:02.43. Five other swims placed either second or third and boosted AMU's score.
In the two team events, the Gyrenes won both relays with a finishing time of 1:53.20 in the 200-yard medley relay and a 3:48.23 in the 400-yard freestyle relay.
Ave Maria is back in the pool Friday, January 23, as they host Indian River State College in their final dual meet of the regular season. The Gyrenes swam against IRSC in a double dual in November and fell to the River on both the men's and women's side. The meet will take place at the FGCU Aquatics Center in Fort Myers, Fla.
