AVE MARIA, Fla.- Ave Maria University is pleased to announce Alex Moorehead as our new Director of Intramural and Club Sports, effective immediately.

Coach Moorehead first joined the Ave Maria University family in April 2021, and has established a reputation for excellence, earning the NAIA Region Six Coach of the Year and becoming a finalist for the NAIA National Coach of the Year.

As Director, Coach Moorehead will oversee the eight intramural sports seasons and the five club sports.  As of the most recent seasons, 490 students at Ave Maria participated in intramural sports while another 60 participated in club sports.

"Intramural sports participation has increased 60-percent in the past two years, so it was appropriate to name a Director," said Vice President and Director of Athletics Joe Patterson. "It's a tremendous way for students to compete and fraternize with one another."

The intramural sports offered by AMU and their respective seasons are:

Co-Ed Kickball (October)
Co-Ed Soccer (November)
Men's Flag Football (January-February)
Women's Flag Football (January-February)
Pickleball (February)
Men's Basketball (March-April)
Women's Basketball (March-April)
Club Sports have been important to Ave Maria, offering students a chance to compete inter-collegiately.  These student-driven teams don't compete at the varsity level, but they do greatly broaden the number of sports available to AMU students.  Further, several of the current varsity sports have had club status in the past, including competitive dance, golf, rugby, swimming, track & field, and ultimate frisbee.

The club sports that are actively participating now are cheerleading, equestrian, women's ruby, shotgun shooting, and women's ultimate frisbee.

"I am humbled, blessed, and incredibly grateful for the opportunity God and the Ave Maria administration has provided me to lead the Intramurals and Club Sports department, and I am excited to contribute my skills and experience to this program," Moorehead said. "It is a true honor to be entrusted with such a vibrant and important part of our community, and I am eager to make a positive impact on the lives of our students."
