WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- The Ave Maria University men's tennis team couldn't pull off a second upset of an NCAA Division II opponent on Tuesday, falling 5-2 to the Sailfish of Palm Beach Atlantic University at the Mitch Gornto Tennis Center in West Palm Beach. The Gyrenes had success at the top of the lineup, winning two doubles matches and another in singles, but couldn't get the needed wins elsewhere to finish off a season sweep of PBA.
Tuesday's match started well for the Gyrenes, as AMU won two closely contested doubles matches to take the opening point. The top team of Anderson Duggan and Gaston Erhardt won by a 7-5 score at the top flight, while the brother duo of Juan Ignacio and Pedro Garcia did the same at the third flight. The win by the Garcia brothers proved to be the clinching point, sending AMU to singles play with a 1-0 lead.
Erhardt continued playing solid tennis in singles play, winning his match in straight sets. The Argentine picked up a 6-4, 7-6 win over PBA's Roberto Binaghi, providing the Gyrenes their other point. Erhardt moved his singles record on the season to 8-3, giving him twice as many singles wins as any other player on the roster. He enters the final two weeks of the season on a four match singles winning streak.
The Gyrenes' best chance at a third point came at the third singles flight, where Duggan and PBA's Juanfer Contreras went to a third set, where Contreras emerged victorious, 5-7, 6-1, 12-10. The Sailfish won the other four singles matches in straight sets, with no Gyrene winning more than four points in a single set.
Ave Maria's final three matches of the regular season will all be Sun Conference matches, and all three will be against nationally recognized competition. The first of these matches will come Saturday, when AMU hosts No. 19 SCAD-Savannah in a match that was postponed from last month due to weather. The regular season will then conclude with matches against No. 3 Keiser and (RV) St. Thomas. All three matches will be played at the AMU Tennis Complex.
