SARASOTA, Fla. — The Ave Maria men's soccer team gave up a late goal to the New College of Mighty Banyans in their 1-0 loss Saturday evening. Despite the Gyrenes putting shots on goal, Ave Maria was held scoreless for the third time this season.
The first half was pretty even between the two, with New College holding a slight one-shot edge in both total shots and shots on goal. Neither team found the back of the net though and they went into the break locked at zero.
Out of the half, the Mighty Banyans had the majority of the shots on goal and scoring chances compared to the Gyrenes. In the 79
th minute, their worked paid off as they scored the lone goal of the game.
Finding themselves down one with just 11 minutes left to play, the Gyrenes tried for another comeback similar to their midweek game Wednesday against the Warner Royals, but it was to no avail. In that time span, the Gyrenes took one shot that went wide.
As a team, New College outshot Ave Maria 18-11. The shots on goal were a little closer, but more in favor of the Mighty Banyans, 12-8.
Mateo Rolon led the team with four shots on goal. Jael Parraga was the only other Gyrene with multiple shots on goal with two. Jerron Dopwell had three total shots, but only one was on target while the other two went wide.
With the loss, Ave Maria falls to 1-4-2 and 0-1-1 in Sun Conference play.
The Gyrenes are home for their next game as they host the #1 ranked St. Thomas Bobcats in a midweek game on Wednesday. St. Thomas is off to a hot start at 6-0 and 2-0 in conference play. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. and the game can be streamed on the Sun Digital Network.
