Women’s Soccer Settles For 2–2 Draw With Warner

AVE MARIA, Fla. — In a SUN Conference battle at Gyrene Field on Saturday afternoon, the Ave Maria women's soccer team played the Warner Royals to a 2–2 draw, despite controlling long stretches of the match.

Prior to the start of the match, the Gyrenes honored their seniors as it was the final home Saturday match of the season.

The women came out strong in the first half, controlling possession and generating significant attacking momentum. The Gyrenes created early scoring opportunities through Catherine Dalton at forward and Kayla Sciortino from center back, but Warner goalkeeper Inna Vannula kept the game deadlocked with multiple key saves.

The breakthrough finally came in the 24th minute when a ball bounced right out of Vannula's reach and freshman Allie Burgess powered the ball in through a header to give Ave Maria a 1–0 lead. The Gyrenes continued to threaten, outshooting Warner 10–5 in the opening half but took just a one-goal advantage into the break.

Warner responded early in the second half. In the 48th minute, Jessica Alejandre capitalized on a stray ball in the box to even the score at 1–1.

Ave Maria showed resilience, quickly regaining command of the match. In the 63rd minute, Claire Wrobleski snuck the ball in on the ground from just outside the penalty area, restoring the Gyrene lead at 2–1 for her ninth goal of the season, the most in a single year of the sophomore's career.

The intensity rose in the final 20 minutes as Warner pushed numbers forward searching for an equalizer. Alejandre struck again in the 75th minute, slotting home her second goal of the match to bring the game even at 2–2. Ave Maria battled to reclaim the lead in the closing minutes, earning six second-half corner kicks and firing 20 total shots, but were unable to find the winner.

With the result, the Gyrenes move to 4–6–3 overall and 0–2–2 in conference play. They get their second point of the season in the standings, moving one point closer to seventh-place Florida Memorial who lost did not play on Saturday.

Ave Maria returns to SUN Conference play next week as they face #11 SCAD under the lights at home, continuing to push their way toward postseason qualification. The game is set for Thursday, October 16th at 7:00 p.m. and will be streamed live on the Urban Edge Network.
