JUPITER, Fla. — In their first tournament made up of mostly Sun Conference teams, the Ave Maria' Men's Golf team finished at the bottom at the Jupiter Collegiate Invitational. The Gyrenes did not necessarily play poor rounds but had trouble keeping up with their fellow conference members across Monday and Tuesday.
Monday's opening round was one of the Gyrenes' better rounds as a team in the fall season, shooting a collective 4-over par. Alfonso Baro Rosas led the team with 68, shooting 2-under par. The highlight of the round was on Baro Rosas' second hole of the day, when eagled a par 4. It was the first eagle of the season for any Gyrene. Matt Mullen also shot under par in the first round with a 69. Daniel Nycum and Ty Kaufman rounded out the group with a +3 and +4, respectively.
As a team, 4-over par is their fifth best round of the season but placed them sixth in the seven-team pool after the opening 18 holes. The one non-Sun Conference member Palm State was in first place after the first round, shooting a collective 10-under par. New College of Florida was right behind the them to lead the Sun Conference teams with a 9-under par.
The afternoon round on Monday was the worst of the tournament for the Gyrenes, shooting 12-over par as a team. Baro Rosas again led the team by finishing under par, this time at -1. However, the other three Gyrenes to score all finished over par. Kaufman was second on the team with a +1, Nycum was third with a +4 and Mullen was fourth on the team with a +8. Nycum recorded the second eagle of the tournament for Ave Maria, carding a three on a 520-yard par 5.
The Gyrenes did a little better in the final round on Tuesday, shooting 9-over par as a team, but could not climb out of last place on the leaderboard. Despite shooting better than the second round as team, no Gyrene finished under par in the last round. Neal Wheeler led the group with an even 70, followed by Baro Rosas, Kaufman and Mullen all with +3.
Individually, Baro Rosas had the best tournament for the Gyrenes, finishing the three rounds with an even score. That tied him for sixth on the player leaderboard. Kaufman was next at 22
nd with a +8 followed by Mullen at 28
th with a +10, Nycum at 32
nd with a +14 and Wheeler at 35
th with a +20.
Keiser won the whole tournament shooting a 15-under par as a team across the three rounds. Webber finished in second with a -5 and Palm Beach State finished third with a +2.
The Gyrenes have one final tournament this fall before packing up the clubs and waiting for the spring season. Ave Maria will travel to Sebring, Florida, for the Nancy Nichols Match Play October 27 and 28. Like the Jupiter Collegiate Landing, most of the teams competing will be Sun Conference teams with Southeastern, SCAD, St. Thomas, Webber and New College all participating. The two additional schools are Point and Florida College. Live scoring of the rounds will be kept on clippd.com.
